On Nov. 4, Interactive Health Technologies officially reaffirmed its commitment to student data privacy by signing the updated Student Privacy Pledge.
IHT signed the original Student Privacy Pledge in 2016 and remains the only educational wearable company to sign the pledge.
“Protecting student privacy is central to our mission,” IHT founder and CEO Jen Ohlson said. “We are dedicated to providing a secure learning environment, prioritizing the safety of our technology platform to better serve students and schools. Ensuring the utmost security is not just our goal; it's our commitment."
Pledge signatories take responsibility to both support the effective use of student information and safeguard student privacy and information security, according to the Student Privacy Pledge website. The pledge goes beyond any company’s standard privacy policy to assure, for example, that companies:
- will “not build a personal profile of a student other than for supporting authorized educational/school purposes” and
- will “maintain a comprehensive security program that is reasonably designed to protect the security, confidentiality, and integrity of Student (Personally Identifiable Information) against risks”
Other notable signatories include Apple, AT&T, Google (G Suite for Education), Khan Academy and Zoom. Student Privacy Pledge signatories commit to, “carry out responsible stewardship and appropriate use of student personal information according to the commitments below and in adherence to all laws applicable to us as school service providers.”
The Future of Privacy Forum, which established the original pledge in 2016, made significant updates in 2020 in order to broaden the scope of protected data.
“Like its predecessor, the Student Privacy Pledge, Pledge 2020 demonstrates signatories’ ongoing commitment to safeguarding student data," FPF CEO Jules Polonetsky said. "The commitments in Pledge 2020 will ensure that the Pledge continues to enhance trust between families, schools, and third party service providers and to support the safe and effective use of student data for student, teacher, and school success.”
IHT has an extensive privacy policy that is published on our company website. We continue to evaluate the policy and our practices to ensure we are utilizing the most modern, secure measures to protect the information we collect through the Spirit System.
“Our commitment to data security and privacy is paramount," Ohlson said. "At IHT, we continuously strive to enhance our practices, ensuring the highest standards of protection for the sensitive information we manage. This approach not only meets increasing regulatory demands but also strengthens trust among students, parents, and educators, emphasizing that safeguarding student data is our highest priority.”
