Those in Spearfish City Park have a new resource to use to access sports/play equipment.
The Black Hills State University Physical Education Program created a Let’s Play Library, filled with equipment to use at the park, such as Frisbees, basketballs, volleyballs, soccer balls, bocce ball, slack lines, jump ropes, and racquet sports.
“Our vision for this project was to create an inclusive opportunity for anyone visiting the park to have access to play equipment,” Dr. Breon Derby, assistant professor of physical education, said. “The BHSU Physical Education Program hopes people enjoy using the equipment provided in the library and have fun being active!”
The library was established through a grant funded by the Zonta Club of Spearfish, as well as donations from various community partners, including the Kiwanis Club of Spearfish, Quik Signs, Fire Carrot Labs, Noah Hummel, The Glass Shop, the city, and the Spearfish Junior League Basketball Association.
“The idea is to borrow, play, and return the equipment to the library,” Derby said. “However, the library is also there to assist anyone who is in need.”
She described that the BHSU PE program will be in charge of maintaining the structure.
“We ask the community to advocate for play by re-stocking the library with gently-used equipment,” Derby added.
